A few years after the construction of the new school building, in Asolo, in the province of Treviso, the new school gym equipped with grandstands for the public and also designed for extra-sports activities, was completed.

The new building was positioned next to the school’s canteen building, creating openings in the existing masonry for direct access to the new gymnasium directly from inside the school.

Both the spatial and functional design of the new premises, as well as the design of the facilities, were designed to utilise and integrate the existing school facilities.

The purpose of this integration was to create one large building with the possibility of separate use of each part if necessary.

In anticipation of the facility being used for extra-curricular activities, grandstands were also built to accommodate approximately 300 spectators with spaces reserved for the disabled.

In addition, the playing areas in the school gym of Asolo were sized to guarantee homologation for local level five-a-side football matches, grassroots level basketball and volleyball championships.

The spatial endowment of the building includes a space for sports activities of more than 700 square metres, two changing rooms for athletes, two changing rooms for referees, an infirmary and association room, toilets for the public, a storage room for sports equipment and technical service rooms.

The designed volume is larger than that of the existing school, which is instead a low building articulated in several bodies facing the outdoor space and towards the indoor gardens.

Hence the choice of figuratively dividing the volume of the gymnasium into two parts: the basement, which reaches the height of the school, seeking a relationship of continuity with it, gathers all the entrances and emergency exits; in the upper part, on the other hand, the window openings give lightness to the whole.

The choice of white for the plinth, like the colour of much of the existing building, pursues the aim of reinforcing continuity, including chromatic continuity, with the school.
