Rebuilding of the “Carducci” middle school gymnasium in Modena

The rebuilding of the Carducci middle school gymnasium in Modena arises from the need to bring the theatre and school gym buildings damaged by the 2012 earthquake up to code, for which seismic adaptation and energy efficiency would have been more costly than their demolition and reconstruction.

The structure is separated from the school by a seismic joint, guaranteeing structural independence, while the east and south sides retain the original compositional features, such as the face brickwork and ribbon windows, in homage to the historical memory of the complex.
On the west side, however, large vertical windows have been introduced, giving the new building a modern and distinctive character.

The Carducci middle school gymnasium in Modena is equipped with a basketball court, homologated in the Silver 1 category, which can also be used as a volleyball court.
In addition, the gymnasium has been designed in such a way that it is possible to divide the playing space into two parts, thanks to the presence of a retractable, motorized grandstand, which allows the space to be optimized according to usage requirements, allowing it to be used by two classes at the same time.

The basement, easily accessible from the outside, houses the changing rooms and accessory rooms.
The project of the Carducci middle school gymnasium in Modena pays particular attention to environmental sustainability: in particular, photovoltaic systems have been installed for energy production, while the roof has been made with a reflective sheath to reduce the heat island effect.
